My name is Karlee and I will be helping to facilitate the land-based camps this summer. Our goal for the Kis Kin Ha Ma Ki Win initiative is to bring a programme that is grounded in the land, controlled by communities, and that is shaped by both the environmental sciences and Indigenous knowledge. As part of this three-year initiative we will be helping to host one- to five-day camps and workshops in Indigenous communities across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. The programme is aimed at local youth (ages 16-24) and will provide opportunities to learn more about environmental sciences through Indigenous cultural world views and customs.
The land-based camps will provide youth with the opportunity to learn about science in local and applied contexts that reflects their lived experience within their communities. The activities will be primarily focused on hands-on learning, problem-solving, and skill development. Harvesting fish, collecting and analyzing water samples, and identifying traditional plants and medicines are just some examples of activities we’ll be doing this summer.
This blog will capture the fun and learning taking place over the next few years. It will also be a place to learn more about land-based education. Check back here regularly for opportunities to take part in camps, campus internships, or to learn about environmental science. Different people will be contributing to this blog, so you will find a range of ideas, science, activities, and updates.
